Sarawak is all set to display its exceptional crafts and rich cultural heritage to the world at London Craft Week 2023.
This follows Malaysia’s participation under the patronage of Her Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.
The event, scheduled from 6th to 14th May 2023, aims to promote Malaysia’s diverse craft traditions, which also include a range of Sarawakian craft emblematic of the state’s unique cultural and ethnic heritage.
Sarawakian artisans, Shirley Vilin, Ros binti Salleh, Senia anak Jugi, and Helena David Kalum, will be given the opportunity to showcase their skills to an international audience, with live demonstrations of Keringkam embroidery, Pua Kumbu weaving, handwoven crafts and basketry, and beadwork.
The exhibition will be held at The Malaysian Hall at The Malaysian High Commission, UK.
It is expected to attract over 3,000 international visitors who will have the opportunity to learn about the history and significance of each craft to Sarawak’s unique ethnic groups, spanning across a diverse range of materials such as ceramics, embroidery, and hand-weaving.
This initiative seeks to increase Sarawak’s visibility and showcase its distinct crafts and cultural heritage to the world.
This aligns with Her Majesty SPB Raja Permaisuri Agong’s vision to tell the stories of the Malaysian people through the language of craft.
World Craft City
Sarawak’s exceptional crafts and rich cultural heritage have gained international recognition, with Kuching being awarded the title of “World Craft City” in 2019 by the International World Craft Council (WCC).
Sarawak’s participation in the London Craft Week 2023 aims to leverage this recognition and increase the region’s visibility as a centre of cultural excellence.
Leading the delegation will be Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abg Johari bin Tun Openg, whose presence strengthens the government’s commitment to promote Sarawak’s cultural heritage and reputation as a leading craft destination, as well as the state’s crafts and cultural diversity.
Overall, the Sarawak showcase at the London Craft Week 2023 promises to be an exciting event, celebrating the richness and diversity of Malaysia’s crafts and cultural heritage while raising awareness of Sarawak’s unique identity to the world.
