The upcoming Pines Square Market in Batu Kawa, Kuching, is set to provide a new destination for fresh produce, daily necessities and local food while creating business opportunities for farmers, hawkers and small traders.
The RM15 million project, which officially broke ground on October 13, 2026, is designed to support the growing population of Batu Kawa while preserving the traditional role of wet markets in Sarawak’s daily life.
The project is fully funded by Lee Onn Group and will be built on land owned by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
Pines Square Market to Feature 300 Business Units
According to repoirts, the project will feature 300 business units, providing space for different types of traders and food operators.
The planned facilities include:
- 270 market stalls for traders selling fresh produce and other market goods.
- 18 food court outlets offering space for food and beverage businesses.
- 12 lock-up shop units for additional commercial activities.
- 286 car parking spaces for visitors.
- 28 motorcycle parking spaces for two-wheel commuters.
- A mini collection centre to help farmers handle surplus agricultural produce.
The market will occupy approximately 3.43 acres of land, with a total building floor area of 6,567 square metres.
Supporting Farmers and Local Traders
Sarawak Deputy Premier and Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the market would help local farmers and traders gain access to a more organised commercial environment.
The mini collection centre is expected to be particularly useful for farmers in surrounding areas who produce vegetables and other agricultural goods. It will provide a place to bring surplus harvests, including produce that cannot be sold immediately or requires further processing.
The initiative could help reduce difficulties associated with handling excess produce while improving opportunities for local agricultural businesses to reach consumers in Kuching.
When Will Pines Square Market Open?
As of October 16, 2026, the Pines Square Market project has reached its groundbreaking stage. An official opening date has not been confirmed in the reports cited here.
Residents and traders should therefore wait for further announcements from the developer or Padawan Municipal Council regarding construction progress, completion and the opening of stall applications.
Once operational, the market is expected to strengthen Batu Kawa’s role as a local commercial centre while improving access to fresh produce and creating new opportunities for Sarawak’s small traders and farmers.
