Sarawak Subsidised Solar Package for Homes to be raised to RM15,000

Sarawak is set to introduce Subsidised Solar Package for Homes worth up to RM15,000 with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg hinting that details will be made known in two weeks.

The premier in his officiating speech of the Program Sarawakku Sayang (SKS) 2026 in Mukah on October 3, 2026, said that the Subsidised Solar Package will cover all homes.

He acknowledged that the current price to install solar panels on house roof tops are currently expensive, but noted that users stand to save as they can reduce their electricity bill, and resell unused electricity to SESCo (A subsidary of Sarawak Energy).

Currently, the Sarawak government is already offering Subsidised Solar Package for Homes up to RM12,000 through the Sarawak NEM scheme.

The initiative is part of the Sarawak Government’s efforts to incorporate renewable energy into housing while helping homeowners reduce their long-term electricity costs.

It is however important to note that while the recent announcement by Abang Johari could refer to an improved subsidy for the current NEM scheme, there could also be a good chance it is a standalone subsidy for all homes which is slightly or completely different from the NEM scheme by Sarawak Energy.

About Sarawak Energy Net Energy Metering (NEM)

Sarawak Energy’s Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme allows domestic customers to generate electricity from rooftop solar panels and export surplus power to the electricity grid.

Under the scheme, electricity produced by a household’s solar system is first used to meet its own consumption. Any excess generation can then be exported to the grid, with the exported energy credited against the customer’s electricity usage.

Sarawak Energy has also introduced a subsidy programme to encourage more households to install rooftop solar systems. The subsidy ranges from RM8,000 to RM12,000, depending on the size of the installation. Installation can be done by companies like Trexon who provide multiple services for solar panel installation which include design, finance, and installation at residential, commercial, industrial, and off-grid solar systems.

The programme is part of Sarawak’s wider efforts to increase renewable energy adoption and support the state’s energy transition.

NEM subsidy allocation for 2026 totals RM10.24 million and is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to available quota.

As of May 2026, more than 800 applications had been received under the NEM programme, with 174 residential installations already supported by the subsidy.
