TYT Wan Junaidi’s 80th Birthday Celebrations in Kuching: Full Programme, Concert and Road Closures

Sarawak will celebrate the 80th official birthday of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar with a four-day programme featuring religious ceremonies, a grand parade, a state awards investiture ceremony and a public concert from October 8 to 11.
The celebrations will bring various official and public activities to Kuching, with Padang Merdeka serving as the main venue for the thanksgiving ceremony, parade and much-anticipated Konsert Rakyat.
It is understood that the programme will begin with a thanksgiving prayer ceremony at Masjid Jamek Kuching on October 8, with approximately 5,000 worshippers expected to attend.
This will be followed by a thanksgiving ceremony organised by the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) at the Unifor Complex on October 9.
Grand Parade and Konsert Rakyat on October 10
The main celebrations will take place on Saturday, October 10, beginning with a thanksgiving ceremony at Padang Merdeka from 6.30am.
A grand parade and assembly are scheduled for approximately 8am, featuring 106 contingents representing seven categories, with an estimated 5,000 participants and attendees.
The programme will continue with the State Awards Investiture Ceremony at Astana Negeri at 12.30pm, expected to welcome approximately 500 guests.
A State Banquet will subsequently be held at the banquet hall of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex.
One of the main public attractions will be the Konsert Rakyat at Padang Merdeka, starting at 8pm, with an estimated attendance of 10,000 people.
The concert will feature popular Malaysian entertainers, including Dato’ Ahmad Azhar Othman, better known as Awie, Aina Abdul and Floor 88, alongside five local Sarawak artistes.
A fireworks display is also scheduled as part of the evening’s celebrations, with its launch location adjusted to improve spectator safety.
The event is organised with the involvement of Majlis Seni Sarawak, according to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
Road Closures and Traffic Advisory
Motorists and visitors are advised to plan their journeys ahead of the celebrations, particularly around Padang Merdeka and Kuching’s city centre.
According to police announcements reported by Malay Mail and The Borneo Post, Jalan McDougall will be closed or diverted from September 28 at 10am until October 10 at midnight to facilitate event preparations.
Road closures and traffic diversions will also affect several roads during rehearsals from October 5 to 8, particularly between 7am and 11am.
On October 10, road restrictions will be implemented from 7am to noon for the parade and assembly, followed by further traffic arrangements for Konsert Rakyat from 7pm until midnight.
Members of the public are advised not to park along affected roads and to use alternative routes where necessary.
Celebrations Conclude on October 11
The four-day celebration will conclude on Sunday, October 11, with a hi-tea reception at Pullman Kuching at 10.30am.
The reception is expected to bring together approximately 700 guests.
The Sarawak government has encouraged the public to participate in the celebrations while maintaining discipline, public safety and harmony throughout the events.
With the Konsert Rakyat, grand parade and fireworks display forming the highlights, the 80th birthday celebrations are expected to draw significant crowds to Kuching, particularly around the historic Padang Merdeka area.
