The Borderland Music Festival 2026 came to an energetic conclusion on Saturday night (Sept 12), bringing two nights of electronic dance music, international DJs and local talent to the Sarawak Cultural Village in Kuching.
Held on Sept 11 and 12, the fourth edition of the festival attracted about 17,000 visitors over two days, according to reports, highlighting the growing appeal of Kuching as a destination for large-scale music and entertainment events.
The festival’s second night was headlined by internationally recognised American DJ and producer KSHMR, who delivered one of the weekend’s major highlights.

KSHMR brings a Sarawak touch to Borderland
KSHMR’s performance on Sept 12 went beyond a conventional EDM set, with the international performer incorporating elements of local culture into his headline show.
During his performance, an animated storyline presented entirely in Malay appeared on the festival’s giant screens, creating a localised visual experience for the Kuching crowd.
The international DJ also surprised festivalgoers by incorporating “Bekikis Bulu Betis”, a familiar Sarawak song, into his EDM set.
The unexpected moment received an enthusiastic response from the audience and gave KSHMR’s headline performance a distinctly Sarawak identity.
Two nights of EDM in the foothills of Mount Santubong
The festival opened on Sept 11 with around 9,000 music enthusiasts attending the first night at Sarawak Cultural Village.
The opening night featured a combination of Malaysian, regional and international acts, with performances including Fizz B2B Mago, Chukiess & Whackboi B2B Boriz, Veena and DNA featuring MC Parkz.
The programme continued with artists including Ramengvrl, Iindahkus, DIA and KENZ, before the night progressed into a larger-scale electronic music showcase.
The second night continued the momentum with performances from Yibi B2B Lele, Mia Q, Rad Kid, Saqon, Scidz, Pandamax, Hades, Ezra Hazard, Tiger Burger & Friends, Jovynn and Juelz before KSHMR took over the main stage.
The 2026 edition also featured international EDM names such as Ben Nicky and Blasterjaxx, alongside a broad selection of Malaysian and regional performers. More than 40 artists were featured across the two-day festival programme.
Music meets Sarawak culture
One of the distinctive elements of Borderland Music Festival 2026 was its attempt to combine contemporary electronic music with Borneo’s cultural identity.
Organisers have described Borderland as more than a conventional music festival, with the event designed to bring together music, culture and nature while providing a platform for local talent.
The choice of Sarawak Cultural Village as the venue also gave the festival a setting closely associated with Sarawak’s indigenous cultures and heritage, while the surrounding landscape and Mount Santubong provided a distinctive backdrop to the EDM performances.
Ahead of this year’s festival, organisers also highlighted traditional cultural workshops and local arts and crafts as part of the wider festival experience.

Borderland’s growing role in Kuching’s events calendar
The conclusion of Borderland Music Festival 2026 adds another chapter to Kuching’s growing reputation as a destination for major music and cultural events.
Before this year’s edition, the festival had already welcomed more than 33,000 visitors over its first three years, generating an estimated RM10.3 million in direct economic impact for Sarawak through accommodation, food and beverages, transportation and tourism activities. The 2026 edition had been projected to generate a further RM8 million in economic impact.
The latest attendance figure of around 16,000 over two nights therefore represents another significant milestone for the festival.
More importantly, Borderland continues to develop a model that combines international EDM, Malaysian music, local talent and Sarawak culture in one event.
Dates for TOK Borderland 2027 already announced
As the final night came to an end, organisers announced that TOK Borderland, a side rave event will be on March 20, 2027. The venue has yet to be confirmed but blind tickets sales are now on-going.
The announcement gives the festival another opportunity to build on the momentum generated by the 2026 edition and further establish itself within Sarawak’s music and tourism calendar.
For Kuching, the successful conclusion of Borderland Music Festival 2026 is another indication of the city’s potential to host large-scale music events that attract both local audiences and visitors from outside Sarawak.
The dates of the 5th Borderland Music Festival scheduled in 2027 however have yet to be announced.
With its combination of international performers, Malaysian talent, EDM culture and the distinctive backdrop of Sarawak Cultural Village, Borderland Music Festival is increasingly becoming part of Kuching’s modern music identity – while keeping one foot firmly in Borneo.
