The i-CATS University College will now be known as i-CATS University following its upgrade to a full-fledge university. i-CATS which is short form for International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak is currently operating at their own dedicated campus at Jalan Stampin Timur, Kuching.
The announcement of the change in stature was announced by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who noted that the upgrade was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education.
Sarawak’s Second State-Owned University with RM400 million campus
With this official elevation, Sarawak now proudly owns two full-fledged universities—i-CATS University in Kuching, and the prestigious University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) over in Sibu.
The upgrade of iCATS to a full fledged university means that the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) programme by the Sarawak government will now have an additional fully certified university hence ensuring that more Sarawakian youths will have equitable access to top-tier, technology-driven higher education without the burden of heavy student loans.
This comes as i-CATS also establishes a brand new Faculty of Aerospace to further facilitate Sarawak’s interest in aeronautics and space.
To ensure world-class standards, i-CATS University is also actively collaborating with the globally renowned Istanbul Technical University in Türkiye, as well as Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), to offer highly specialized bachelor’s degree programmes in aerospace-related fields.
Aside from that, iCATS has also confirmed they are building a massive RM400 million campus in Trombol on a 250 acre piece of land.
This state-of-the-art campus is being developed in phases and will include comprehensive student dormitories, high-tech labs, and vibrant lifestyle spaces.
About i-CATS University
The journey of i-CATS University is a testament to Sarawak’s enduring commitment to educational excellence and technical skills development.
First established in May 2002 as Kolej Teknologi PPKS, the institution initially offered a modest selection of diploma programmes aimed at addressing the Sarawak’s immediate technical workforce needs.
As its academic offerings expanded and its reputation grew, the institution was officially renamed the International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak (i-CATS) in August 2006.
For over a decade, it served as a cornerstone for vocational and technological training in Borneo.
In December 2020, the institution reached a significant milestone when it was elevated to the status of a University College, allowing it to offer its own degree programmes.
Today, this historic transformation into a full-fledged university in 2026 solidifies i-CATS’s position as a premier educational hub, perfectly positioned to propel Sarawak’s green energy and technological ambitions into the future.
