A total of 1,258 participants gathered at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang in Sibu on Thursday evening to take part in a mass kampua tossing event, earning the city an entry in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR).
The record-setting event was organised by the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) in conjunction with the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2026, turning one of Sibu’s most recognisable foods into a large-scale cultural celebration.
The event surpassed the required benchmark of 1,000 participants, with the final figure of 1,258 confirmed during the event. An MBOR representative subsequently presented the certificate to the organising committee.
Kampua becomes centrepiece of Sibu’s cultural identity
Kampua, a traditional dry noodle dish strongly associated with Sibu and its Foochow heritage, was the centrepiece of the record attempt.
The concept was designed not simply as a record-breaking exercise but also as a way of highlighting the cultural significance of kampua and bringing the Sibu community together.
BCF 2026 organising committee chairman Councillor Michelle Law Wan Ling had earlier described kampua as more than just food, highlighting its connection with Sibu’s identity and heritage.
Participants came together to perform the tossing activity simultaneously, creating a unique spectacle at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1.
Event exceeds original target
The organisers had initially hoped to gather as many as 2,000 participants, although the minimum benchmark set for the MBOR attempt was 1,000.
According to Law, the response was initially slow but gained momentum closer to the event, with participants also registering at the last minute.
However, some late walk-in participants had to be turned away because of time and event-management constraints.
With 1,258 people eventually taking part, the event comfortably surpassed the MBOR qualification threshold.
Another record for Sibu’s Borneo Cultural Festival
The latest achievement adds another Malaysia Book of Records entry associated with the Borneo Cultural Festival.
Sibu previously made the records book during BCF 2025 when 2,288 people took part in a mass ride on a 50-foot traditional Melanau itut swing at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang.
The achievement continues Sibu’s efforts to use the Borneo Cultural Festival as a platform to showcase local traditions, food and cultural diversity in creative ways.
