71 year old JKR Kuching building to be redeveloped as Wisma JKR Sarawak

A major redevelopment is set to transform Batu Lintang as the existing Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Sarawak building makes way for a brand-new Wisma JKR Sarawak, signalling a bold step forward in modernising the Sarawak’s public works administration.
The current JKR Kuching divisional building, built in 1955 along Jalan Batu Lintang, will be demolished to accommodate the new Wisma JKR Sarawak project.
The redevelopment is envisioned as a modern landmark, reflecting innovation and improved service delivery for Sarawak’s infrastructure sector.
According to media reports, JKR Sarawak director Datu Dr Cassidy Morris recently visited the site, acknowledging the legacy of the existing structure while looking ahead to a more future-ready facility.

Batu Lintang is currently undergoing massive transformation with the area set to house an KUTS ART station, a Gleneagles Hospital Kuching, and several more high-end condominiums and shopping areas.
The new complex is expected to improve operational efficiency by centralising departments, enhancing inter-agency coordination, and providing better facilities for staff and stakeholders.
Details about Wisma JKR Sarawak
While detailed specifications of the Kuching project have yet to be fully disclosed, it is largely expected that Wisma JKR Sarawak will be 21 storeys as this was made known in earlier reports related to the project.
In addition to that, JKR Sarawak had used a 3D render of a high rise JKR Sarawak building as their main photo on Facebook in recent months.

The building, as seen below, is not named as the new JKR building, but the image render can be assumed to be a ‘hint’ of the new complex although there is nothing concrete at time of writing.
Nonetheless, the image suggests that the Batu Lintang project could what seems like the patterns of the popular Dayak ratan mat (krasah/kasah) while incorporating modern office spaces, digital infrastructure, and sustainable design elements aligned with current engineering and environmental standards.
Cost as well as construction duration has not been made public at the time of writing.
The Legacy of JKR Sarawak
Established as a cornerstone of public infrastructure development in the Sarawak, Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Sarawak has been instrumental in transforming Sarawak’s physical landscape for decades.
From the construction of vital road networks linking remote communities to the development of schools, hospitals, and government buildings, JKR has consistently driven socio-economic growth. Its engineers and planners have played a critical role in enabling connectivity across challenging terrains, particularly in rural and interior regions.
