Sarawak Unveils Ambitious Plan for “Kuching AI Data Campus” in Tanjung Embang

The Sarawak government has announced plans to develop a massive Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Campus in Tanjung Embang, Kuching.

If you have not known, Tanjung Embang is also the site for Sarawak’s proposed deep sea port as well as its new international airport.

The initiative was unveiled by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during his official working visit to the K2 Strategic Data Centre Campus in Dublin, Ireland.

A 405-hectare (approximately 1,000-acre) site has already been identified in Tanjung Embang for the high-impact facility, which will be officially named the “Kuching AI Data Campus”.

To support the immense and heavy computational requirements, the campus will feature its own dedicated power and water supply infrastructure.

The facility is explicitly designed to house AI system connectivity nodes, which will serve as the foundation to form a future “AI grid” network.

“The project will be implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), beginning with a first phase covering 120 hectares,” Abang Johari stated after touring the Dublin facility.

The Premier noted that the new Kuching hub will be heavily modelled after the world-class K2 Strategic Data Centre Campus he visited.

The data campus represents a cornerstone in the state’s broader vision to transform Tanjung Embang into a major urban hub.

It is intended to directly complement and support other massive proposed developments in the area, which include the construction of a new airport, a seaport, and the development of expansive low-carbon industrial zones.
