JKR Sarawak Calls Tender for Redevelopment of SMK Tebakang
The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR Sarawak) has opened a tender for the redevelopment of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tebakang in Serian Division under Phase 2 of the RM1 billion Sarawak Dilapidated Schools Redevelopment Programme.
The project, listed under Tender No. T/383/07/2026, is part of the state and federal governments’ continuing efforts to replace aging school buildings with modern, safer and better-equipped learning facilities.
According to the tender notice, eligible registered contractors are invited to bid for the project officially titled “Pembangunan Semula Sekolah Daif Sarawak RM1 Billion (Fasa 2) SMK Tebakang Sarawak, Serian Division.”
A compulsory tender briefing and site visit will be held on 13 August 2026 at 9.00 a.m. at Meeting Room 1, Building Branch, Level 17, Wisma Saberkas, Kuching. Only authorised representatives registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) or the Unit Pendaftaran Kontraktor dan Juruperunding (UPKJ) are permitted to attend.
Tender submissions must be delivered to the Sarawak Procurement Board before 12.00 noon on Monday, 21 September 2026. Tender documents are available for a RM100 document fee.
The tender notice also requires bidders to submit several mandatory documents, including a valid Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) issued by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), a Beneficial Ownership (BO) declaration, and a statutory declaration on compliance with anti-human trafficking and forced labour regulations.
Part of Sarawak’s RM1 Billion School Redevelopment Programme
The redevelopment of SMK Tebakang is one of the projects under the RM1 billion allocation jointly funded by the Federal Government and the Sarawak Government to rebuild dilapidated schools across the state.
The programme was introduced to address long-standing infrastructure issues affecting schools, particularly in rural and remote areas.
Rather than carrying out piecemeal repairs, many schools are being completely rebuilt with new academic blocks, administrative buildings, science laboratories, hostels, dining halls and supporting infrastructure.
The RM1 billion initiative was implemented in several phases, beginning with 41 schools under Phase 1, followed by 52 schools in Phase 2, before expanding to additional schools identified under subsequent phases.
According to recent government updates, more than 80 redevelopment projects under the programme have already been completed, while the remaining projects are progressing through construction and implementation despite rising construction costs.
Although the tender notice does not specify the detailed scope of works for SMK Tebakang, redevelopment projects under the programme typically involve complete replacement of deteriorated facilities to provide students with modern, safe and conducive learning environments.
Five Decades of SMK Tebakang
Established in 1974, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tebakang has been a cornerstone of secondary education for students from Tebakang, Mongkos and surrounding communities in Serian Division, Sarawak.
The school began with 15 teachers under its first principal, Jones Noeb, and initially comprised an administration block, four classroom blocks, a school hall, teachers’ quarters and student hostels, reflecting its role as a boarding school serving rural students.
Over the past 50 years, SMK Tebakang has grown into one of Serian’s established rural secondary schools. Its alumni include doctors, engineers, pilots, PhD holders and other professionals, highlighting the school’s contribution to human capital development in Sarawak. In 2025, the school celebrated its Golden Jubilee, marking five decades of academic achievement, community service and student success.
In recent years, SMK Tebakang has gained recognition for its achievements in STEM education, with students representing Serian and Sarawak in international innovation competitions.
Interestingly, the school’s official song, Tebakang Peduli (Tebakang Cares), also includes the Bidayuh Serian language in its lyrics, making it one of the few, or only school which does so in Malaysia.
