RM160 million approved for new Stephen Yong – Batu Kawa route
The Sarawak government has approved RM160 million to build a 5KM route linking Jalan Tan Sri Wee Boon Ping/Jalan Stephen Yong to Jalan Batu Kawa/Matang traffic light.
According to DayakDaily, a bridge will connect a dual carriage road on both sides of the Sarawak river, easing congestion which is currently happening along the Kampung Segedup.
The report by DayakDaily also mentioned that the project is currently in the design and land acquisition. phase, with construction expected next year.
Based on the image above, it seems the project will also build two more smaller bridges, both crossing over Sungai Moyan at different locations.
In June this year, Borneo Post reported that the Sarawak government had approved the project to reduce traffic congestion in the Batu Kawa area.
The report cited Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian as saying that the project in under the 12th Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review (2023).
It also cited JKR Sarawak had planned the project in four stages namely consultants appointment, geological survey, land acquisition, and public bidding/tender being the fourth and last stage.
Currently, those from Jalan Tan Sri Wee Boon Ping/Jalan Stephen Yong (and greater Kota Sentosa and beyond), Matang or Batu Kawa would have to drive to either Bau, or go through the 3rd Mile Interchange if they wanted to go to each other’s area.
With the new route and bridges, the journey to reach either side from the other is expected to be much shorter.
The new route is also expected to benefit eco-tourism spots like Sumiran Eco Park and Resort as well as Borneo Happy Farm, which will now be closer for those in the larger Kota Sentosa area.
