Eating in Kuching

Medan Niaga Permaidani Kampung Boyan, Gersik dan Sourabaya

The Medan Niaga Permaidani Kampung Boyan, Gersik dan Sourabaya, popularly known as just Medan Niaga Permaidani, or Medan Niaga Permaidani BGS, is a public eatery located at Kampung Gersik.

I do not know when the Medan Niaga (hawker’s square) started operating, but news reports say that the current look is actually due to upgrades and maintenance works by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) which was completed in September 2023.

After the renovation, the hawker’s square started operating in November 2023 and was officially declared opened on 24 January 2024.

Built with a cost of RM2,094,000, the hawker’s centre is now under the care of Koperasi Bangun Boyan Berhad and One Eden Enterprise, in which the Koperasi Bangun Boyan Berhad is tasked to manage food court at Kampung Boyan with One Eden Enterprise managing the food court at Kampung Gersik.

What to expect at Medan Niaga Permaidani

There are some 40 stalls selling a variety of food items in Medan Niaga Permaidani.  There are also stall selling crafts and arts.

Food sold are pork and alcohol free as it is within a Muslim Malay village.

Among the food available are bakso, lalapan, pizza, shawarma and more.  Below are some photos of the place courtesy of SEDC.

The hawker centre offers diners a place to enjoy food while being able to look at the Kuching Waterfront which is across river.

How to go to Medan Niaga Permaidani

If you are from the city centre, the Medan Niaga Permainadi is located across the Sarawak river, at Kampung Gersik.

That said, you can either go there by boat, or hire a taxi/GRAB/Maxim.

It is important to note that parking is limited and driving to the location can be rather confusing for first timers as the hawker square is located within a village.
