Damai Peninsular Master Plan to transform Damai into major tourist attraction
Damai is going to be developed in the future as the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) embarks on a massive plan named Damai Peninsular Master Plan.
Some details of the Damai Peninsular Master Plan was shared by the General Manager of SEDC, Datu Abdul Hadi during Dialog TVS which was aired by the TV station recently.
According to Abdul Hadi, the master plan was tasked to SEDC by Premier of Sarawak, Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Abang Openg, and it involves turning Damai into a massive tourist magnet in the future.
Abdul Hadi said that the plans have been approved in principal.
How will Damai Peninsular Master Plan shape Damai
Abdul Hadi explained in the interview that among the plans in the master plan is to have a marina, a cruise ship terminal, expanded golf course, cable cars and a few more iconic hotel chains.
There is also plans to build a 2KM walkway from Kampung Santubong to Damai itself.
However, based on the images shared by TVS during the interview, there also seems to be plans to build a botanic garden with canopy boardwalk, and luxury eco-resort villas at Teluk Embang.
Also shown by TVS via a video shared during the interview is the Bayfront which will have an Eco-Hub.
More images show by TVS also show plans to improve existing and currently constructed infrastructure such as the proposed Borneo Astronomical Centre, making a Hill Station on Mount Santubong, and build an Eco-City Precint at the Peninsular Gateway (nearby Buntal).
In addition, there is seems to be plans to create an Arts and Cultural Precint at Kampung Santubong and build a Golf Resort at what is called Headland Precint.
Abdul Hadi explained that the master plan in general wants to create more activities that can coordinate and support each other, hence increasing tourist and tourism activities within the Damai area.
He explained further that despite the massive plans, the master plan will take into account the environment, with ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles proposed to be banned from the Damai master plan area in the future.
Abdul Hadi also said that SEDC will engage with Sarawak Forestry Corperation when it came to environment related issues as well.
Despite the proposal, the master plan is starting with the construction of a 20KM dual-carriage road from Kuching to Damai, alongside the the on-going Kuching Urban Transformation System (KUTS) Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART).
In addition to that, there is also plans to introduce dedicated cycling lanes to Damai as well.
Other plans include having high value homes within the area as well.
Eventually, the master plan will change Damai into a concept called Damai resort city where density is low, but quality of living is high.
Pending studies
Despite all the planning, Damai Peninsular Master Plan is still looking into studies as well as the possibility of building one of the regions biggest cruise ship terminal as well as and artificial marina.
Abdul Hadi noted in the interview that Kuching itself had missed out on a lot of cruise ship calls, and regarded the cruise ship terminal in Miri being ‘not big enough’.
He also elaborated that the company which will manage the whole project is a subsidary of SEDC called Damai Holdings, and that the Sarawak government will own all the land under the project.
In addition, SEDC is also looking into reclaiming land of up to 250 acres in the area although he admitted that studies need to be conducted first before any work can be done.
