“Jalan Guro” to mark Kuching’s decade long friendship with Seoul’s Guro City

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is set to name a specific thoroughfare within its municipality as Jalan Guro, formalizing a permanent symbol of the decade-long friendship with Guro City, Seoul.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng announced the plan to name the 600-meter-long street during a recent courtesy visit to Guro District Mayor Jang In-hong at the Guro District Office in South Korea.
The new road, located in Kuching South, is intended to stand as a lasting, physical representation of the mutual respect and friendship between the two cities.
Act of reciprocity
The designation of Jalan Guro is an act of reciprocity following Guro City’s initiative in 2022 to name one of its streets “Kuching South-ro.”
By establishing parallel streets named for their sister cities, both councils aim to ensure the longevity of their partnership.
Mayor Wee emphasized the strength of the relationship, which began in 2013 and has since blossomed through various exchanges.
“The partnership between Kuching South and Guro has grown from strength to strength through youth exchanges, cultural collaborations, and people-to-people connections,” said Mayor Wee.
Focus on enduring partnership
The collaboration has been highlighted by the annual Youth and Cultural Exchange Programme, launched in 2015, which facilitates cross-cultural understanding and features performances at major events like the Kuching Festival in Malaysia and the Guro Festival in South Korea.
In addition to cultural ties, the mayors recalled the 2019 signing of the Guro–Kuching South Business Council agreement.
Both leaders have committed to revitalizing the council to focus on business networking, skills transfer, and knowledge sharing.
The upcoming Jalan Guro will serve as a daily reminder of these deepening ties as Kuching South continues to pursue greater international recognition, including its 2021 designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
