Wisma Melayu Sarawak aims for Hari Raya opening

The unique Wisma Melayu Sarawak at Jalan Diplomatik is set to be completed this year with progress of the massive building now standing at 85 percent completion.
The RM73 million building sits on top a small hill just across SMK Demak, with its golden ‘keringkam’ and ‘tengkolok’ facade hard to miss if you are using Jalan Diplomatik.
In case you didn’t know, the design of Wisma Melayu Sarawak was inspired by both the ‘Keringkam’ and ‘Tengkolok’, prominent Sarawakian Malay heritage clothing.
The Borneo Post reported that Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan is hopeful that the building be ready for the coming Hari Raya.
He was quoted as saying that he hoped it could be used to host the coming Hari Raya open house celebrations.

Despite his eagerness to have the building ready earlier than the May 2025 expected completion date, Awang Tengah acknowledged that essential infrastructure like the power substation, water connectivity, and interior finishing, including carpeting and furniture, are still pending.
The Deputy Premier further added that landscaping works and road upgrades around the building are also progressing well and that the building will also be linked with the future Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) System which is currently under construction.
Once ready, the golden roofed Wisma Melayu Sarawak will not only become the headquarters of Amanah Khairat Yayasan budaya Melayu Sarawak (AKYBMS), but also feature a grand hall capable of accommodating about 2,000 people, a museum gallery about the history and cuture of Malays in Sarawak, office spaces, a cafeteria, and a surau.
The building will also have a special landscape area as well as open space for activities.
