Kuching South plans to ban plastic straws

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) intends to ban single-use plastic straws within its jurisdiction.

The proposal was reported by New Sunday Tribune which also quoted MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng as saying that the matter will be discussed with hawkers with a one month trial period conducted.

This one month period will allow hawkers to get used to the implementation of the straw ban.

According to the mayor, the ban would then be enforced on food premises in shopping malls and restaurants.

The proposed implementation process to ban single-use straws in Kuching South is expected to take within the next six months to complete.

Banning the use of single-use straws had already been banned in Sibu, with other resort cities like Bali also strictly enforcing such law.
