China Eastern Airlines set to connect Nanjing and Shanghai to Kuching

Airline expected to start flights from June

Chinese airline, China Eastern Airlines will introduce flights from Nanjing and Shanghai in China, to Kuching from June 2024.

According to Malaysia Arts, Culture and Tourism Minister, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, the route to Nanjing will be the first international direct flight from China to Sarawak after being void of one for the past few years.

King Sing further elaborated that the first flight for the route would be on 24 June 2024, with three weekly flights.

Flights will be on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday respectively.

It was also made known that China Eastern Airlines will connect Shanghai with Kuching in September with the airline connecting it’s main hub, Shanghai Pudong Airport to Kuching International Airport.

According to King Sing, the Shanghai Pudong – Kuching route would have daily flights with China Eastern Airlines, likely to utilize either the Boeing 737-800 or Airbus A320neo for both the Nanjing and Shanghai route. Both airplanes models can carry up to 194 passangers on board.

The new air route would mean Kuching International Airport would gain two more international destinations this year.

It is currently only serving three international direct flights namely the Kuching – Singapore route, the Kuching – Brunei route and the Kuching – Jakarta route.

Beside’s flying to Kuching, China Eastern Airlines would also be flying to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah in the same month.

Nanjing is the capital of China’s eastern Jiangsu province.  It covers roughly 300km up the Yangtze River from the city of Shanghai. The city was the national capital during part of the Ming dynasty making it an interesting tourist destination.
