Construction begins for Regency Hospital Kuching as Kuching sets for 2K hospital beds in 2030

Construction has begun for the Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching in the Northbank township which would also house the newly named The Northbank IBRACO Autonomous Rapid Transit station.
The hospital which is a 300-bed private specialist hospital by Singapore-based Health Management International Pte Ltd (HMI Medical) was announced in October 2025, with the hospital targeted to begin operations in 2029.
Based on reports, the Regency Hospital Kuching is planned as a 300-bed tertiary hospital, offering specialist and subspecialty healthcare services supported by smart hospital systems and advanced medical technology.
According to HMI Medical, the facility is intended to provide internationally benchmarked clinical standards while improving access to advanced healthcare services for residents in Kuching and the wider region.
The hospital will also be fully owned and operated by HMI Medical, marking the group’s third hospital in Malaysia.
HMI Medical currently operates Mahkota Medical Centre in Melaka and Regency Specialist Hospital in Johor, giving the group more than two decades of healthcare experience in Malaysia. The group also has operations across Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.
More than just a new hospital
Beyond expanding healthcare capacity, the Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching project is expected to contribute to Kuching’s economy through the creation of more than 1,000 jobs.
HMI Medical Group CEO Chin Wei Jia said the hospital would create opportunities for economic growth while providing cross-training opportunities for clinical professionals and supporting patient-centred care.
The project is also expected to support Sarawak’s ambition of strengthening its position as a destination for medical tourism in Southeast Asia, potentially attracting patients from neighbouring countries seeking specialist healthcare services.
Senior surgeon and HMI Medical board director Dr Richard Chew, a Sarawakian who has been involved with HMI Medical’s Malaysian hospitals, is leading the establishment of Regency Hospital Kuching.
Over 2000 hospital beds in Kuching by 2030
According to Deputy Premier of Sarawak, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing & Local Government Sarawak, Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian, the addition of Regency Specialist Hospital Northbank will enable Kuching to have over 2,000 hospital beds by 2030.
Dr Sim in a Facebook posting said that 1,000 beds will be coming from private hospitals like the Regency Specialist Hospital Northbank, while public hospitals are set to contribute another 1,000 beds to Kuching by then.
