A new Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex is set to be built near Kampung Pendam, close to the Brunei Darussalam border.
According to Sarawak Tribune, the move aimed at significantly enhancing cross-border connectivity and economic integration between Malaysia and Brunei.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg confirmed the in-principle agreement recently following a visit to the Second Sungai Limbang Bridge Construction Project. He emphasized the critical role of the new CIQ in strengthening security cooperation and stimulating economic ties.
The Premier elaborated that the initiative is expected to ease travel, improve mobility, and further solidify economic relationships between the two nations.
The project’s timing is particularly opportune, as the Second Sungai Limbang Bridge is slated to open to the public in April 2026.
Both the new CIQ and the bridge are anticipated to have a substantial positive impact on the economy of northern Sarawak.
Should the CIQ complex near Kampung Pendam proceed, travel time between Limbang town and Lumapas, Brunei, will be dramatically cut to approximately 15 minutes, a significant reduction from the current journey of over 45 minutes via the Tedungan border checkpoint.
