The UNIMAS (Universiti Malaysia Sarawak) Prima Health Centre (PHC) will be operational this September.
According to Borneo Post’s report, the date of operation was confirmed by Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
The report quoted Alexander as hoping thatthe centre would not only elevate UNIMAS’ teaching and learning facilities but also further enable healthcare to be more accesible to locals within the area.
The minister said that the center would provide services in categories of general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and accidents and emergencies.
According to the Public Works Department’s statement of Facebook, the centre will handle non-critical health cases similar to what is handled in the Ministry of Health’s health clinics.
It comes with 300 rooms, an X-Ray room, an Eye Clinic, a Medicine Lab and Public Health Check room. It also has a main operation theatre for surgeries.
The centre also has a conference and discussion rooms to cater teaching and lessons, and comes equipped with a Muslim prayer hall, cafeteria and kindergarten.
The RM485.988 million design-and-built project started in 2021, and is built under the 11th Malaysia Plan on an 11.57 acre of land nearby UNIMAS. Photos of the Prima Health Centre (as shared by JKR) can be seen below.
Phase 2 of the whole project is located on 15.8 acres of land next to PHC, and is expected to be completed in September 2025.
Phase two involves the completion of a teaching hospital which most locals refer to as ‘UNIMAS Hospital’.
Aside from Prima Health Centre, Samarahan is also served by the Sarawak Heart Centre, which is the extension of the Sarawak General Hospital.
