The long-awaited Sungai Paku Bridge in Spaoh has officially opened to the public, marking another major milestone in Sarawak’s ongoing effort to improve rural connectivity and strengthen transport infrastructure in the Betong Division, as well as Sarawak as a whole.
The bridge, located along Jalan Tanjung Sebekut, was officially opened by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
It replaces the previous one-lane bridge, which had become a traffic bottleneck for residents, businesses and road users travelling between Spaoh and Betong.
Constructed at a cost of RM36.9 million, the 100-metre steel arch bridge is expected to significantly improve traffic flow while enhancing safety for motorists.
One of the most immediate benefits of the new bridge is the reduction in travel time. Road users travelling between Betong and Spaoh can now save approximately 30 minutes, providing a more efficient route for commuters, logistics operators and emergency services.
The improved accessibility is also expected to facilitate smoother movement of agricultural products from surrounding rural communities, particularly some 20 long houses within the area.
