Dewan Suarah Kuching set for reopening on 13 July 2026
After months of intensive renovation and safety improvements, the beloved Dewan Suarah Kuching (Kuching Civic Centre) is officially reopening its doors to the public.
Based on an graphic shared by Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), the place called Dewan Suarah Negeri Kuching will open on 13 July 2026, which is a couple of days away.
This comes as the iconic umbrella-shaped tower, which has been a staple of the city’s skyline for decades, has received a much-needed facelift and is stepping into a brand-new era.
The reopening follows a comprehensive RM5 million roof replacement project overseen by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR).
The initiative was sparked by structural safety concerns when a heavy piece of roofing sheet blew off during a storm in April 2025.
With the new and improved roof perfectly complements nearby landmarks like the Borneo Cultures Museum and the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building which share the similar golden roofing.
According to the poster shared by MYSED, Dewan Suarah Kuching will be available for community activities, food stalls and recreational spaces, but it does not confirm whether the observation deck as well as the tower, the most prominant feature of the building and area, would be open for public use.

The Kuching Civic Centre, locally known as Dewan Suarah Kuching, is a historic landmark located in the heart of Kuching City.
Officially opened on August 1, 1988, its establishment commemorated Kuching’s prestigious elevation to city status.
Featuring a futuristic, umbrella-shaped tower, it quickly became a beloved public space, offering a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of the city and its lush surroundings.
In its early days, the observation deck hosted a vibrant restaurant and pub, making it a premier destination for locals and tourists alike.
Over the decades, it has served as a central hub for community gatherings, cultural festivals, and youth activities, cementing its historical importance as a lasting symbol of Kuching’s growth and unity.
