New RM40.7 Million Lachau Police Station Approved Under 12MP

The Federal Government has approved the construction of a new permanent police station in Lachau, Sri Aman, with a total allocation of RM40.7 million under the Fifth Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

The project is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ border development initiatives for Sabah and Sarawak and is expected to strengthen security and law enforcement capabilities in the rural interior of Sarawak.

The new facility will be built in Pekan Lachau under the administration of the Sri Aman District Police Headquarters (IPD Sri Aman).

According to reports presented during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on May 15, the project will be implemented by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR Sarawak).

Sarawak Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the proposed site is located at Lot 1252, Block 12, Selanjan Land District, covering approximately 3.2 hectares of land under the Federal Lands Commissioner.

Facilities at the new Lachau Police Station

The project has been described as a major infrastructure upgrade for the area, which has long awaited a permanent police facility.

The approved development will include a new administrative building together with residential quarters for police personnel and their families.

Plans currently include 14 units of Class F quarters and two units of Class E quarters. Supporting infrastructure such as an electrical substation, sewage treatment plant, surau, water tank tower, pump house, vehicle garage, guard house, and defensive bunker will also be constructed as part of the project scope.

Date of completion

The new police station is expected to significantly improve public safety coverage and operational efficiency in Lachau and surrounding settlements.

The project is also viewed as an important step in improving government service delivery and security infrastructure in rural Sarawak, particularly in strategically important interior regions.

Construction timelines have not yet been officially announced, but the approval under the 12MP rolling plan indicates that implementation planning is already underway.

The development is anticipated to provide better working conditions for police personnel while enhancing response capabilities for emergencies, crime prevention, and community policing activities across the district.

History of Lachau Police Station

Lachau is a small township located along the Pan Borneo corridor in Sri Aman Division, serving nearby rural communities and longhouses in the region.

For many years, policing services in the area operated through limited facilities that supported basic law enforcement and public safety functions.

As population movement and economic activities increased over time, calls for a more comprehensive and permanent police station also grew stronger among residents and local leaders.

The existing police presence in Lachau has played an important role in maintaining security along transport routes connecting Sri Aman and Betong while supporting rural crime prevention efforts.

However, infrastructure limitations and aging facilities highlighted the need for modernization.

The newly approved permanent police station marks one of the largest security infrastructure projects for the area in recent years and reflects ongoing efforts to improve government services and security readiness in Sarawak’s rural communities.
