SK Hermanus Assan redevelopment completed

The redevelopment of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Hermanus Assan in Sebauh has officially been completed with JKR Sarawak sharing photos of the new fresh looking facilities.

The school has been identified under the “dilapidated schools” (Sekolah Daif) initiative within the Bintulu region and its completion is considered timely as Sarawak pushes harder to improve education access.

For years, SK Hermanus Assan has faced significant challenges due to its aging timber structures and its vulnerability to seasonal flooding.

Located in the Sebauh district, the school has frequently been forced to close during heavy monsoon seasons, disrupting the academic calendar for its pupils.

The redevelopment was prioritized by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Sarawak government to move the school away from the “Scale 6 and 7” category (buildings defined as structurally unsafe).

Modern Infrastructure and Facilities

The redevelopment project involves the transition from traditional wooden blocks to modern, permanent concrete structures. According to technical specifications and planning documents, the new site features:

  • Classroom Modules: Modern classrooms designed with better ventilation and lighting.
  • Specialized Rooms: New administration blocks, science labs, and utility rooms.
  • Sanitation: Integrated toilet facilities and utility rooms (such as the Block A1 module) built to current health and safety standards.
  • ICT Integration: As part of the school’s vision for 2025–2026, the new building is designed to support digital learning with improved internet connectivity and specialized ICT corners.

Resilience Against Natural Disasters

A primary driver for the new building is flood mitigation. In early 2026, SK Hermanus Assan was among the 26 schools in Sarawak that had to delay the start of the new term due to rising water levels.

The redevelopment incorporates elevated floor designs and strategic site selection to ensure that even during heavy rainfall, the educational process remains uninterrupted and the school can potentially serve as a safe community shelter if needed.
