Kuching Civic Centre revitalization project begins

The Kuching Civic Centre, a familiar landmark with its distinctive umbrella-shaped tower, is currently undergoing significant transformation.

After years of neglect and deteriorating conditions, a comprehensive upgrading and renovation project is breathing new life into this iconic building, ensuring its relevance and safety for future generations.

The decision to refurbish the Civic Centre was prompted by a series of events, most notably a partial roof collapse that raised public and official concerns about the building’s structural integrity.

This incident highlighted the urgent need for a major overhaul, leading the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED) to prioritize the roof improvement works, with July 2025 mentioned as the possible start of repairs.

However, it seems that the project is now more than just a repair job and has become a full-scale revitalization.

The key focus remains to replace the Civic Centre’s aging roof, but it is noted that the replacement roof will also feature a new design that incorporates elements symbolic of Sarawak’s unique identity.

This modern touch aims to complement other prominent landmarks in the city, such as the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building and the Borneo Cultures Museum.

The renovation works are being overseen by the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, with an estimated completion date set for early 2026.

Kuching’s Civic Centre opened in 1988 with the building playing host to many events which include recreational activities.

The observation tower, which once offered breathtaking panoramic views, is one of the tallest towers in Kuching, making it a sure tourist attraction once the renovation works are completed.
