National Secondary School, SMK Matang Jaya, recently held a cycling event called ‘JOM Kayuh’ to create awareness of Thalassaemia under the NowYouSeeMe Thalassaemia awareness.
Thalassaemia, which is an inherited blood disorder that affects one body’s ability to produce hemoglobin and healthy red blood cells, is a dangerous disease if left without close monitoring and regular treatment with most severe types causing serious organ damage and can be life threatening.
In the past, severe thalassaemia was often fatal by early adulthood. But with current treatments, those suffering from the disorder can likely to live into their 50s, 60s and beyond.
SMK Matang Jaya’s cycling event
For the event, some 103 students, 42 teachers and staff members of the school, including 10 parents, participated in the kilometre long cycling event.
It started at about 7.30AM in the school, and ended at the nearby Masjid Al-Abyad Matang Jaya.
As the crowd slowly cycled through Taman Matang Jaya with the help of the local Padawan Police patrol car, pamplets were also distribibuted to nearby coffee shops and houses to create more awareness on the blood disorder.
At Masjid Al-Abyad, the participants also took part in cleaning the mosque and meet local worshippers to also create awareness about Thalassemia.
It is understood that the Thalasemia awareness campaign is part of the National Thalassemia campaign called ‘NowYouSeeMe 3.0’.
SMK Matang Jaya is doing its part for campain as it is one of the 70 schools nationwide to participate in the campaign with the school being one of the six in Sarawak chosen to be part of the massive awareness campaign.
