Samarahan Boulevard Progress: Phase 1 Nears Completion, RM70 Million Phase 2 Planned

The ambitious Samarahan Boulevard development in Kota Samarahan is moving closer to its next stage, with Phase 1 nearing completion and the tender for Phase 2 expected to be called this year.

The latest update was given by Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah following the second 2026 meeting of the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA) Steering Committee on September 22, 2026.

Phase 1 has an estimated cost of about RM25 million and is progressing despite a slight delay. The overall Samarahan Boulevard development is estimated at approximately RM127 million.

RM70 million Phase 2

According to Abdul Karim, the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) is expected to call the tender for Phase 2 in 2026.

The second phase has a ceiling allocation of approximately RM70 million, subject to the project’s implementation arrangements.

The complete boulevard is expected to take around two to three years to fully develop.

The project had already been described earlier in 2026 as a major development for Kota Samarahan.

The boulevard stretches approximately 1.44 kilometres, from Masjid Al-Muttaqin to the MPKS area, and is intended to provide space for recreation, community activities and large-scale events.

A new venue for major events

One of the key objectives of Samarahan Boulevard is to provide an alternative venue for major programmes and celebrations.

Abdul Karim said the development could help reduce traffic congestion in Kuching when large-scale events are held at locations such as Padang Merdeka.

The boulevard is also planned to provide recreational and community spaces as Kota Samarahan continues to grow.

The development is also linked to wider plans for the area. In January 2026, more than 1,000 acres near the proposed boulevard were identified for a permanent green area as part of the planned Samarahan Park, with the proposed space intended for recreation, exercise and public use.
