Over RM300 million to triple BCCK’s capacity to be biggest in Borneo

The proposed extension of Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) via what is now called BCCK 2 will cost over RM300 million.

The estimate cost was given by Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at an event recently.

A report by Dayak Daily quoted the Premier as saying the Sarawak government will be funding the project which will increase the current 5,000 capacity BCCK to 15,000 once completed.

With a total of 15,000 indoor capacity, BCCK could be the biggest indoor arena in Borneo (assumption based on BCCK 2 being the world’s largest single-floor timber structures at 15,500m² under-roof)

The expansion will likely not disturb the current BCCK building as BCCK 2 will be a saperate building by its own.

What we know so far about BCCK 2

News about the construction of BCCK 2 is not new.

In 2022, the Sarawak government announced plans to have BCCK expanded, but the proposal has gained momentum in recent months.

Prior to that, Kirk Studio released artist impressions of the new building in 2023, giving details that it would be seated on a waterfront which overlooks the sprawling Sarawak river.

The studio also said that it will be adjacent the current BCCK, and would resembles the seed of the Belian tree.

In addition to that, BCCK 2 will also be the world’s largest single-floor timber structures at 15,500m² under-roof with a clear span of 42metres.

The massive building would also include a luxury hotel, a tropical rainforest plaza, cascading gardens, river promenade, and while still maintaining it’s world-class function facilities.

It is understood that the 10,000 capacity refers to the number of seats the convention centre can accomodate in its indoors arena.

This year, Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry & Performing Arts, Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, hoped that the BCCK would be ready before 2028, citing that Kuching will host the International Water Exhibition Congress 2028.
