Kuching is set to have a new nature reserve like what it has in Sama Jaya as the government plans to convert an area within Bukit Siol as the latest Nature Reserve in Kuching City.
According to The Star, the new nature reserve would cover a 44ha site.
It will be located between the Sarawak State Library (Pustaka Negeri Sarawak) and Bukit Siol in Petra Jaya.
The announcement of such area was made by Premier of Sarawak, Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who was quoted as saying that such area will be the ‘green lungs’ of the city.
He was further quoted as saying that once a place has been gazetted as a nature reserve, no development can take place, with the height of buildings surrounding the nature reserve also limited.
In addition, Abang Johari also stated indigenous trees such as belian and nyatoh would be planted in the new Bukit Siol reserve while landscape experts will assist in the design of the nature reserve.
The date for Bukit Siol Nature reserve to be gazetted was not mentioned in the report but it was stated that the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) will be in charge of the new nature reserve.
