Iconic Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration

KUCHING – A colourful display of sounds and sights was the highlight at the Gawai Dayak parade this year.

The parade, known also as Niti Daun, began from Tun Jugah Shopping Centre, and ended at the Square Tower at Kuching Waterfront.

It was led by Tuai Rumah Kujat Dundang from Kapit.  Some 3,000 participants took part in the colourful event, including VVIPs led by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and wife Datin Patinggi Dato Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.

There were 103 contingents from throughout Sarawak in the parade, comprising of groups from the Iban, the Bidayuh and the Orang Ulu.  These three ethnics make up the majority of the Dayaks in Sarawak.

Niti Daun was last organized in 1994, and ever since then, it has not been held in Sarawak until this year.

The event is expected to return next year.
