i-CATS University College Upgraded to Full University Status in Sarawak

i-CATS University College has officially been recognised as a full-fledged university, marking a significant milestone for Sarawak’s higher education sector and its efforts to develop a skilled, technology-driven workforce.

The recognition was confirmed by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announcing the approval on June 6, 2026, after the institution fulfilled the requirements for full university status.

The formal recognition certificate was subsequently handed over on October 20, 2026.

While not widely reported, a photo of the recognition certificate presented to Abang Johari gave indication that i-CATS would be renamed to Sarawak Tun Openg University of Technology or SOTECH in short.

Sarawak Gains Another State-Owned University

The upgrade strengthens Sarawak’s higher education landscape, giving the state two fully fledged state-owned universities: i-CATS and the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), which is based in Sibu.

The development is expected to expand opportunities for Sarawakian students to pursue higher education in fields that support the state’s economic transformation, industrial development and demand for highly skilled professionals.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the university’s new status would enable it to expand its academic programmes.

The ministry will work with the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) to facilitate the necessary approvals for new courses.

RM400 Million Campus Planned for Trombol

One of the major developments associated with i-CATS’ growth is the planned construction of a new campus in Trombol, near Telaga Air in the Kuching division.

The Sarawak Government has estimated the project cost at approximately RM400 million, with construction to be carried out in phases. The development is intended to provide modern learning facilities, including student accommodation and facilities to support aerospace studies.

The campus is expected to support the university’s future growth as it develops programmes aligned with Sarawak’s workforce requirements.

From Kolej Teknologi PPKS to a Full-Fledged University

The institution’s journey began in May 2002, when it was established as Kolej Teknologi PPKS, a subsidiary of Sarawak Skills offering diploma programmes.

In August 2006, it was rebranded as the International College of Advanced Technology Sarawak, commonly known as i-CATS. On December 3, 2020, it received approval to become i-CATS University College.

Its elevation to full university status in 2026 represents another major step in the institution’s development and its role in Sarawak’s education system as is expected play a huge role in supplying the much needed high skilled proffesional workforce in Sarawak in the future.
