Convention Centre to be built on Igan River bank

New convention centre to be as big as UCTS Canselor Hall

A new convention centre will be built on the river bank of Igan River in Sibu with Kampung Datu soon set to become the largest traditional village in Sarawak.

The proposal for the convention centre as well as the redevelopment of the village was confirmed by Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during his speech at Sibu Division Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri.

His spech was reported by UKAS in an article dated 14 April 2024.

According to the Sarawak Premier, the convention centre would be part of the redevelopment of Kampung Datu, which he hoped will modernize and preserve cultural characteristics of the village and its surroundings.

The Sarawak Premier also noted that the new upcoming convention centre will be about the same size of University of Technology Sarawak’s (UTS) Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Aside from the convention centre beside Igan River, there are also plans to build a 15KM road that connects Kampung Datu to Kemuyang, which will also have a Sarawak government subsidised housing project.
