Sarawak government takes over Borneo Highlands Resort

The Sarawak Government plans to redevelop and return Borneo Highlands Resort into its prime state after it won a legal case involving the ownership of the resort.

According to a news report by DayakDaily, the plans to rejuvenate the resort are in place and had already begun, but it will take time before the resort reopens to the public.

The resort is currently entrusted to the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).

A report by Borneo Post cited that a casino in Borneo Highlands is also a possible but no concrete decision has been made to turn the highlands into Malaysia’s second Genting Highlands, which is famed as a casino, event centre and theme park.

There has also been plans to turn the highlands into an attractive tourism and modern agricultural centre, which seems more likely considering the news report by Borneo Post on this proposal to be more detailed.

What happened to Borneo Highlands Resort?

Borneo Highlands Resort used to be a premier holiday location bordering Indonesia in Padawan, Kuching.

The resort was a joint venture between Country Heights Holdings Bhd’s (Borneo Heights Sdn Bhd) with the Sarawak Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) which represented the Sarawak Government.

However, in 2020, the Sarawak government decided to terminate the agreement after as it claims the property developer had failed to address contract breaches.

The developer challenged the allegations and had appealed the decision.

On March 7, 2023, a three-member Federal Court bench headed by Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim decided there was no merit in Borneo Heights Sdn Bhd’s application for leave to appeal against the forfeiture order, giving the Sarawak government full control of the land.

The control of the land means the Sarawak government can now develop the land to fit its purpose.
