Pending to Damai expected to take 38 minutes with Kuching ART, 99% at-grade

The journey from Pending to Damai Sentral is expected to only take 38 minutes with the Kuching Urban Transformation System (KUTS) Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) Green Line once it is fully operational in 2027.

This is based on the estimate provided in the EIA Report which was published and shared by Sarawak Metro recently.

Based on estimates using Google Maps, the journey (with Penview Hotel as reference for Pending due to its proximity to the Pending KUTS ART Station) is slower by at least 10 minutes if one drives from the same locations with clear roads, worsening if there is heavy traffic.

How long a typical journey would be by car.

In addition to that, the KUTS ART Green Line is expected to run from 6AM to 12 mignight at a maximum speed to 70km/hr with an 8 minute frequency schedule.

Aside from the journey time, the EIA also revealed that most of the KUTS ART Green Line would be at-grade with only 0.79 km elevated.

The elevated route would be near Santubong Suites and Kampung Santubong, and it is done to reduce the gradient of the route so that it does not exceed the maximum gradient of 6% for the ART lane.

All 10 stations proposed for the line would also be at-grade, taking inspiration from the ‘Teratak’ concept which was previously shared to the public.

Phases of KUTS ART Green Line

Based on the EIA report, the KUTS ART Green Line would be divided into two phases namely Phase 1 from Pending to Yayasan Sarawak, and Phase 2 which is from Yayasan Sarawak to Damai Sentral.

These phases would be divided into three segments with the EIA report stating that Package 2 implementation will not be under the project’s scope of work and will be part of Jalan Sulatan Tengah road upgrading which is handled by a different Project Proponent.

The second phase however is seen to be more challenging given the longer route, rougher terrain, and the need to buil an elevated route for the KUTS ART nearby the Culvert Hotel (near Santubong Suites and Kampung Santubong).

The second phase would also have more river crossings with the KUTS ART Green Line crossing Sg Damai, Sg Santubong and Sg Loba Kara.

As mentioned previously, the KUTS ART Green Line EIA Report is currently open for public scrunity.
