Miri Airport to get RM150m upgrade

Miri Airport will soon be upgraded to cater for four million passangers annually. The airport currently handles about 2.3 million passangers.

DayakDaily reported Malaysia Transport Minister, Anthony Loke, as saying that the number of aerobridges would be increased from three to five during this upgrade.

The portal also reported that the expansion will take three years to complete.

Previously, The Star reported Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin as the person who announced the RM150 million cost for the expansion.

The paper quoted Lee as saying that the approval for the expansion was given by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Miri Airport is in dire need of an upgrade with The Star reporting that the airport has already hit 90 per cent of its capacity.

The airport is the Northern gateway to Sarawak and serves international direct flights to Singapore despite its status as a domestic airport.

It is the second biggest airport in Sarawak after the Kuching International Airport.
