Kuching – Pontianak flights to resume in 2024

Sarawak government waiting formal green light from Indonesia

Kuching – Pontianak flights will likely resume next year after being suspended for over a year.

According to BERNAMA’s news report, the Kuching – Pontianak flight route was suspended on March 2022, and Sarawak had since tried to re-open the route to ease travel between the two cities.

This means that that the Supadio International Airport in Pontianak, Indonesia will be linked directly to the Kuching International Airport, Malaysia.

The exact date for flights to resume however remain unknown as the Sarawak government is still waiting for the formal green light from Indonesia.

According to New Sarawak Tribune, low cost airline, AirAsia, is keen to fly the direct route.

It is also noted that Supadio International Airport has not begun international flights yet with the Indonesian government renovating the airport this year to expand its capacity to 3 million annually.

Citizen’s Journal reported that the Indonesian government currently limits international flights within the country with international flights only allowed from eight cities in Indonesia.  Pontianak is not currently on this list.

Aside from that, the site also stated that Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, Raden Sigit Witjaksono, is supportive of reinstating the route.
