Batu Kawa to have water theme park and new shopping centre by 2030

Batu Kawa, a rapidly growing constituency in Kuching, Sarawak, is set for a significant transformation with the future development of a water theme park alongside other major lifestyle amenities.

The Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Batu Kawa assemblyman, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, announced the plan, which is part of a larger initiative to position the area as a major destination by 2030.

The water theme park is scheduled to be part of a combined 70 acres of park land, which will also include a new shopping centre.

This large-scale development reflects the area’s vision of becoming a key lifestyle and recreational hub.

The location of these new proposed Batu Kawa water theme park and shopping centre is near the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry, a site already undergoing rejuvenation, where a new multipurpose hall has been built over 20 acres of water.

The planned water park and recreational area will occupy a separate parcel of land, covering approximately 40 acres across the road from the quarry.

While the specific attractions of the water theme park are yet to be fully detailed, the project is a major component of the overall area beautification and infrastructure upgrade, aimed at enhancing local tourism and community well-being.

The development is being pursued by the state government, with continuous discussions regarding private land near the Ang Cheng Ho lake for subsequent phases.

About Batu Kawa

Batu Kawa (also spelled Batu Kawah) is a vibrant suburban area in the Kuching Division of Sarawak, Malaysia, administered by the Padawan Municipal Council. Its name, meaning “stone crater/wok,” is said to originate from wok-shaped stones found by the Batu Kawa River.

Strategically located near the city center and linked by the Pan Borneo Highway, it has seen significant growth. The area is home to the Batu Kawah New Township (popularly known as “MJC”), a large-scale integrated development offering residential, commercial, and lifestyle amenities.

Key projects within this area include the ongoing enhancement of the Batu Kawa Riverbank Park, the rejuvenation of the former Ang Cheng Ho Quarry and the improvements of bustling local markets like the Pasar Tamu and night markets.
