Sheraton Kuching Hotel review

Sheraton Hotel Kuching, or better known as Sheraton Kuching is the latest ‘big name’ hotel in Kuching City.

It opened this year and I had the priviledge to stay at this hotel before the Gawai celebrations.

Location

The hotel is located in the heart of the city. It enjoys proximity to major tourist attractions, as well as other major hotels in Kuching.

Aside from that, Top Spot, a major seafood dinner spot for locals, is located just beside the hotel.

Many local favourite breakfast shops, are also located just minutes away from Sheraton Kuching, making it perhaps one of the best placed hotels in Kuching.

To get a clearer idea where the hotel is, you can check the Google maps below.

Checking-in at Sheraton Kuching

The check-in process at Sheraton Kuching was uneventful, which is good. It was smooth and quick with the staff at the counter also being polite.

However, the hotel couldn’t allow us early check-in (check-in time is 3PM).  They said that the room wasn’t ready.

Since we came at 2PM to try our luck checking in early, we were left waiting for an hour in the luxurius looking lobby.  The lobby was comfortable, pleasent and had lime water served for the wait.  There was also a piano in the lobby and a bar for those who wanted something more than lime water.

While it is entirely our fault to try our luck for an early check-in to the hotel, I do miss the good old days when check-in was earlier than 3PM.

Sheraton Kuching room review

Entering the room was also uneventful as well, but I would like to point out that the room door lock worked like a charm.

Unlike some hotels, Sheraton Kuching’s lock activated instantly upon a swipe of the access key and continued to serve well throughout our stay.  I was informed you could also use your smartphone as an access card but my wife who handled the check-in process, opted not to.

Anyway, the room wasn’t that big and had two single beds.

It had a view of the city, and had all the basic amenities you need for a comfortable stay such as a hair dryer, toiletries, toothbrushes, a safety deposit box and a bluetooth speaker which also doubles as an alarm and watch.

There’s also two bathrobes, four complimentary drinks and two very comfortable room slippers.  The bathroom also came with a rainshower bathroom, and a bathtub, both having strong pressured hot and normal temperature water.

There was also a coffee capsule machine as well.

Aside from that, there’s a study table, and the TV had clear in-house channels of the likes of AXN, HBO, ASTRO SuperSports and news.

The beds and pillows were also very comfortable and the room temperature could also be controlled.

Overall, if I had to work from the room, it wouldn’t be a problem as everything is already in place including free internet access.

Sheraton Kuching Pool

Our main reason to stay at this hotel was to check out the pool which was located on the 23rd floor of the hotel.

There’s two pools on the 23rd floor, namely the infinity pool which offers a good view of Kuching City, and the kids pool, which was closed during our stay.

The 1.2m deep infinity pool is well protected from the strong winds that is usually available at this height.

While the pool isn’t huge, the view it offers is breathtaking, which meant I could spent hours just being there. The pool is open til late, so you can also enjoy an aerial view of Kuching city at night. There is however limited pool chairs nearby the pool but I guess that’s equal to the size of the pool as well.

Beside the pool is a kids playground room, with what seems to be a well equipped gym located just beside the playground.

There’s a changing room nearby the pool, but unfortunately there isn’t any pool bar with the pool having limited towels as well (it actually ran out when we were there, twice).

Sheraton Hotel Kuching view

We were placed in a room on the 11th floor of the 23 storey hotel.  This placed us in the middle of the towering hotel.

The view was rather restricted since there was a few tall buildings around the hotel which blocked our view of the Kuching Waterfront.

Sunset view is almost impossible from our room but you do get a good view of the street below which was also not so bad.

The pool area which is located on the 23rd floor of the hotel on the other hand has a better view of the city and also the mesmerizing Kuching sunset.

Since Sheraton Kuching is the tallest building in Kuching to date (or within the area), it has the best view of the city and its surroundings.

Sheraton Kuching breakfast buffet

For breakfast, we opted to try out the breakfast buffet.

The breakfast buffet is served at the ground floor restaurant called Nomadic.

The restaurtant has massive windows and overlooks Jalan Padungan.  Personally, I feel the restaurant is well planned and I like how it was spacious.

I also personally liked the breakfast spread which had a wide variety of food which included Laksa Sarawak which was on point.  There was also nasi lemak, and a variety of noodles and porridge.

In addition, there breakfast spread also had local cakes and the service by the waiters and servers were also good as well.

Parking at Sheraton Kuching

There is limited parking space for cars around Sheraton Kuching Hotel and it also cost a flat rate of RM10 per entry, per car.

The two storey basement carpark can park a limited number of cars but I think it is probably one of the cleaner and better lighted of such parking in Kuching.

When I parked my car here, I was also happy with the space each parking had, with the road going in and out of the parking space adequately big to fit my 4×4 car.

For those not staying more than a few hours, parking at the nearby parking multi-level carpark is the best option as it is cheaper and there is also a skybridge connecting both the hotel and the carpark.

Conclusion

I personally think Sheraton Hotel Kuching’s biggest advantage is its pool and breakfast buffet.

The room we stayed in is on par or slightly better than other hotels, and the staff were also very polite and helpful.  That said, I had an enjoyable stay here and hope to return in the near future.
