Sarawak Independence Day

Sarawak Independence Day or Sarawak Day is the official independence day celebrated on 22 July annually by Sarawak.

It is a public holiday in Sarawak and is celebrated to mark the establishment of de facto self-government and independence on 22 July 1963.

The official Sarawak Independence Day public holiday was gazetted by the government of Sarawak in 2016 to raise awareness about Sarawak’s past and contributions of its past leaders.

Sarawak Day is largely observed with Sarawakians flying the Sarawak flag on their homes, and business establishments.

Popular streets like Padungan Street also see an increase number of Sarawak flags being flown during the day.

In the past, several NGO groups organized gatherings to mark the day, while the government usually organizes formal historical re-enactment to mark the day.

Events related to Sarawak Day in Kuching

Since 2016, the Sarawak government has made it a point to organize official events to mark the day, with every year having different themes.

In most events, Sarawak leaders will dress in official attire to attend the events.

NGOs as well as member of the public sometimes also organize gatherings to mark the day.
