The Sarawak government is aiming for its first Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system to be completed in 2026.
According to a news report by the Borneo Post, the first route to be completed would be the ART’s Blue Line from Rembus in Samarahan to Riveria covering a distance of 27.6 kilometres.
The report quoted Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin as suggesting that operations will likely start in early 2026, with the whole ART system under the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) to be fully completed in 2027.
The other two routes for the ART are Red Line which connects Kuching Sentral with Pending on a 12.3km track, and the Green Line which stretches from Pending to Damai in Santubong, covering a distance of 30km.
Despite being completed in 2027, the ART lines will only be fully operational in 2028 the report further adds.
Sarawak Metro which is in charge of the whole project, is currently doing the second testing for the world’s first Hydrogen fueled ART in Samarahan.
It is understood that feedback received from the test run, or Proof of Concept, will be used to improve services for the tram when it starts operation in 2025.
According to previous news articles, the Sarawak government plans to introduce feeder Hydrogen busses to the ART services.
