Sarawak considering MASWings takeover

The Sarawak Government is reported to have agreed in principal to take over MASWings which is currenly owned by Malaysia Airlines Group (MAG).

According to a news report by MalayMail, the proposal for such move was made by the Malaysian government after Sarawak made its request to own its own airline.

The report however suggest that the deal has not been finalized with Sarawak wanting to do its own homework if such move would benefit and fulfil its current requirements and needs.

The Star further quotes Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg as saying that Sarawak wants an airline which can moderate current air fares between West Malaysia and Sarawak.

He was also quoted as saying that he also wants the Sarawak owned ariline to be allowed to travel beyond Borneo, including to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

MASWings currently only serves the domestic market within Borneo.

In addition to that, Abang Johari also was quoted as saying that if the takeover is final, then the Sarawak governemnt will decide on wether the MASWings name will be retained or changed.

The idea of MASWings being taken over by the Sarawak government is not new as it was also brought forward in 2015.

Currently Kuching is served by AirAsia, MASWings, Scoot, FireFlyz, Malaysia Airlines, MYAirline and Brunei Airlines.
