Miri Airport to gain new aerobridges and expanded terminal

Miri Airport is gearing up for significant upgrades in the coming months, promising enhanced facilities and a better travel experience for passengers.

According to an article by DayakDaily, the upgrades address the need for modernization and increased capacity to accommodate growing passenger traffic.

The article quoted Sarawak Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin as saying one of the key improvements is the replacement of the airport’s aging aerobridges.

The first replacement is scheduled for March 2025, marking the beginning of a phased upgrade.

In addition to the aerobridge replacements, the airport terminal will undergo a substantial expansion. This expansion aims to improve traffic flow within the terminal, increase parking availability, and introduce dedicated bays for various transportation services, making it easier for passengers to get to and from the airport.

The expansion project is expected to significantly boost the airport’s passenger handling capacity, increasing it from two million to four million annually.

The terminal’s floor area will also be expanded to accommodate the increased traffic and new facilities. The proposed expansion will see the terminal expanded to 25,000 square metres from the current 16,900 metres.

A major highlight of the expansion of Miri Airport is the addition of six new aerobridges, bringing the total to nine. This will greatly improve the boarding and disembarking process for passengers.

Furthermore, the upgraded airport will feature a dedicated international departure lounge, providing a more comfortable and convenient experience for international travelers.

Also in plans is a separate area for rural air services, streamlining operations for flights to and from remote areas.

No completion date was mentioned in the report for the upgrades.
