Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School

The first Petra Jaya Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School is one of five private schools proposed to be open by the Sarawak Government in the near future.

Another one is set to be completed in Semenggok, to form the The Semenggok Yayasan Sarawak International School.

It is an initiative to provide quality education to Sarawakians in light of the constant flip flops in education policy by the federal government.

The idea of the private school was mooted by Sarawak Chief Minister, Abang Zohari Openg.

According to an article by DayakDaily, the all Yayasan Sarawak International Private Schools will be managed and owned by Sanjung Services Sdn Bhd which is a subsidiary of Yayasan Sarawak.

Each school will need RM40 – 45 million to implement with extra funding also required to run the school.

ENROLLMENT

The schools will cater to students from Year 7 to Year 11 or Form 1 to Form 5.

Student selection will be inclusive, meaning that students from all races, strata and origin can enter as long as they are Sarawakians and meet the selection criteria.

It will accept students regardless of economic status, but there will be a quota for students from well-to-do families.

The school plans to take about 500 students, with 100 students in each level.  Each classroom will have about 25 students.

80 percent of the students would be provided with boarding facilities.

Students need to achieve a minimum of Band 4 in their Classroom Assessment (PBD) and need to sit for a placement test before enrolling in the school.

Enrolment for the Petra Jaya branch of the school began with Form 1 in 2022, with the school beginning operations in 2023.  The first intake had 111 students.

Enrolment for the Semenggok branch is expected to start in 2024 after the completion of the campus at the end of 2023.

FEE STRUCTURE

Students from well-to-do families will have to pay the full fees, while students from M40 families will receive partial subsidy. Students from B40 families will receive full subsidy in the school.

At the moment, there’s no mention of the fee structure.

ACADEMIC

According to Sarawak Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Dato Sri Michael Manyin, the Kuching Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School will offer the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) offered by the Cambridge Assessment International Education Board.

Students in this school will also be asked to prepare for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations as private candidate.

Three of the classes will be for STEM (Science, Technology, English & Mathematics) stream and one class will be for Arts stream.

Bahasa Malaysia will also be thought in the school.
