Kuching to have new Astana Sarawak?
Kuching might have a new ‘palace’ in the future as a local online portal, DayakDaily, suggest that there is suggestions that a new Astana Sarawak be built to replace the ageing one which stands proudly at the Sarawak river across the Kuching Waterfront.
The daily reported that a ‘reliable source’ told them that the current Astana is not suitable for living and is suffering for wear and tear.
The report suggest that the new Astana would be located on Astana Hill, between the Sarawak Botanical Garden, and Jalan Astana.
The land is said to be the current location of the DBKU Clubhouse, and was once used by the General Operations Force in the 1980s before the land was left unmaintained.
Shall the news be true, the new Astana will not be seen from the Kuching riverbank.
The current Astana has been serving as the official residence for the Sarawak Rajah and then the Governer of Sarawak since 1970.
