Kuching South implements ban on plastic straws beginning 1st April 2020

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will start implementing bans on single use plastic straws from 1st April 2020.

According to a report by BERNAMA, which was carried by Suara Sarawak, MBKS mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the ban would involve all hawker stalls under its jurisdiction.

BERNAMA further quoted the mayor as saying that 1st March would be used by the council to introduce and test the ban on single use plastic straws, with a fine of RM50 imposed on hawkers not adhering to the new law.

It is understood that once successfully implemented among hawkers in MBKS, the move to ban plastic straws would be extended to food operators in shopping malls and restaurants.

Prior to this, MBKS had already proposed to implement the ban on single use plastic straws in hawker stalls within its jurisdiction.

When implemented this 1st March, MBKS will be the second council in Sarawak to implement such law after it was first implemented by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) on 1st Jan 2020.
