BCCK 2 to add 10,000 seat arena space for Kuching

The further expansion of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, known as BCCK 2, is now available online with artist impressions of the project also shown in full.

Based on the designer’s studio website, which is Kirk Studio’s website, the design of the expansion has been approved. Photos featured here are from their website.

Once completed, the convention centre will see the landmark project become the world’s largest single-floor timber structures, at 15,500 m² under-roof with a clear span of 42metres.

Unlike the current convention centre, BCCK 2 will include a luxury hotel, a tropical rainforest plaza, cascading gardens, river promenade, and 10,000 seat arena, while still maintaining it’s world-class function facilities.

In terms of design, the designers explained that the BCCK 2’s distinct form resembles the seed of the Belian tree.

Its building’s curvilinear form will be parametrically optimised for the efficiency of the timber structure, with a clear span of 42 metres.

The curves will allow extensive overhangs to protect the building interior and occupants from the intense tropical rainfall and solar radiation.

Kirk Studio also explained that timber was chosen for its environmental performance,as it can reduce carbon emissions by 60-75% compared to traditional materials.

BCCK 2 wil be built adjacent to the existing Convention Centre. Kirk Studio explains that it will be seated on a sprawling waterfront site overlooking the Sarawak River.

Once completed, BCCK will further cement itself as the biggest convention centre in Borneo.
