New Golf Course Approved Between Sematan and Telok Melano to Boost Sarawak’s Southern Tourism Belt

Sarawak’s southern coastal tourism corridor is set for another major boost following the approval of a proposed new golf course situated between Sematan and Telok Melano.
The project aims to introduce a premier sports and recreational attraction to the Lundu – Sematan district, complementing the region’s existing natural wonders, pristine beaches, and marine life reserves.
Speaking to reporters after flagging off the Rimbun International Sematan Run 2026 on Sunday, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg confirmed that the state government has officially given the green light for the development.
Expanding the Southern Coastal Tourism Corridor
The proposed golf course aligns with long-term master plans to position Lundu and Sematan as primary eco-tourism and sports hubs.
The vision for the area’s tourism ecosystem was first championed under the administration of the late fifth Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, and continues to expand rapidly under current state initiatives.
With the completion of the landmark Pan Borneo Highway – which directly connects Telok Melano (the “KM 0” starting point of the highway) to Kuching and extends northwards – accessibility to Sarawak’s southern tip has been drastically improved.
According to the Premier, enhanced road connectivity makes it ideal to develop high-value recreational and hospitality facilities extending across:
- Telok Melano & Sematan: Known for quiet coastal escapes and turtle conservation.
- Lundu: Famous for Mount Gading National Park, home to the rare Rafflesia flower.
- Bau: Known for historical gold mining sites, fairy caves, and Tasik Biru.
Supporting Infrastructure & Island Tourism
To cater to an expected influx of domestic and international travelers, Abang Johari highlighted the necessity of supporting infrastructure, including convention centers, boutique resorts, and modern accommodation options.
The new golf course is expected to synergize with nearby marine attractions, such as:
- Talang-Talang Islands & Satang Island: Key sites under the Talang-Satang National Park dedicated to sea turtle conservation and eco-diving.
By diversifying local offerings from nature-based eco-tourism into premium recreational sports like golf, Sarawak aims to extend visitor stays, attract higher-spending tourists, and spur socioeconomic growth for local communities in Sematan and Lundu.
