Gedong Circuit: Borneo’s largest motorspot facility expected to start construction in 2026

In 2024, reports emerged that Gedong, a district in Samarahan, is set to make history in the realm of motorsports by becoming Sarawak’s first-ever international motorsports hub.
This week, the ambitious project, known as the Gedong Circuit is highlighted again, with more confirmed details of the massive project which intends to make Gedong a major regional focal point for various racing disciplines.
According to Dato Ahmad Ibrahim, President of the Sarawak Motorsports Association (SMA), the development of Gedong Circuit as a long-awaited dream nearing reality.
Gedong Circuit: The plan
The Gedong Circuit is planned on a site spanning 600 acres. It is designed to accommodate a wide range of motorsports, including competitive categories such as F3 (Formula 3) and various motorcycle racing classes.
The grand vision for the facility is to establish Gedong as the go-to destination for motorsports (F3 and below) across the entire island of Borneo.
This positioning is expected to draw competitors and teams from neighboring states, elevating Sarawak’s status as a key reference centre for motorsports in the Southeast Asian region.
The cost
The project is backed by the Sarawak government, with land already secured and allocation provided by the Premier of Sarawak.
The total estimated cost for the first phase of construction is substantial, ranging between RM150 million and RM200 million.
Pending final approval, construction is slated to begin within the timeline of 2026 to 2027.
The location
As reported earlier, the Gedong Circuit will be located near the Gedong Ithmus although no source has confirmed its exact location.
Regardless, the construction of such sports facility is long awaited and would definately spur not only motorsports within Sarawak and Borneo, but also the tourism sector.
