6 new hotels opening in Kuching, Bintulu has highest occupancy rate in Sarawak

There would be at least six new hotels opening in Kuching in the near future, adding more hotel rooms to Kuching’s accomodation scene.

Out of the six, three of the hotels would be international chain hotels, one believed to be the currently under construction Langit-Citidines Hotel and condominium.

According to Borneo Post, which reported Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Sarawak chapter chairman John Teo, Kuching is currently served by 48 star-rated hotels with 6,626 rooms, and 45 budget inns or motels with 1,694 rooms.

The sum of both star-rated and budget hotels accumulate to 8,320 rooms in Kuching, excluding the new hotels.

According to the same Borneo Post report, John also highlighted the need for more hotel rooms by 2027 as Sarawak’s biggest convention centre then, BCCK 2, will be able to accomodate up to 10,000 guest.

John pointed out the current year-to-date average occupancy rate in Kuching stands at 63 per cent.

Without elaborating on specific dates, the report also said that the highest occupancy rate for Kuching was 92 per cent and lowest at 33 per cent.

Meanwhile, Miri has about 6,000 hotel rooms with year-to-date occupancy rate at 55 per cent on average, Bintulu has 4,521 rooms an occupancy rate of between 72 and 95 per cent, and Sibu offers2,807 rooms with an occupancy rate of between 30 and 46 per cent.

New Sarawak Tribune reported John as saying that there are over 22,000 hotel rooms available across major cities in Sarawak as of August 2024.
