The construction of St. Paul’s Church in Tarat Melawi has begun with the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction last Friday.
UKAS reported that the groundbreaking was officiated by Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, who is also the Tarat Assemblyman, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
According to the report, the Anglican church is estimated to cost of RM1.6 million and it is built on a one-acre plot.
Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) had contributed RM400,000 to support the project with the church expected to be 160 feet in length and 60 feet in width.
TVS in a related report said that the RM400,000 is given for the construction for the first phase of the church constuction.
Once completed, 800 congregants can gather in the Tarat Melwai church for their religious and community activities.
Where is Tarat Melawi?
Tarat Melawi or better known as Kampung Tarat Melawi is a village within the Tarat area which also consist of Kampung Tarat Mawang and also Kampung Tarat Sibala. Tarat is an area within the Serian Division, about an hour from Kuching.
According to Wikipedia, some 90% of those staying in Tarat are Bidayuh with the area served by two schools namely SMK Tarat and SK Tarat.
